How to enter

It’s free and easy to enter the awards and your entry should not take too long to complete. You can get some help by viewing and printing our Top Tips on entering the awards here.

The awards are open to all UK golf clubs regardless of size or type.

The timings for the 2010 awards are as follows:

 

18 May 2010                   Awards entry submission begins

13 August 2010              Entry deadline for awards

27 August 2010              Shortlisted clubs announced

September 2010             Visits to shortlisted clubs/courses

4 October 2010               Winners announced

January 2011                  Winners Awards Dinner – BTME, Harrogate

March/April 2011             Winners trip to US

May 2010                        Ambassador/Sponsor hosted event - TBC

To enter follow the steps below:

  1. Firstly you need to choose which categories you wish to enter and select these on the Entry Form. You can find detailed information on each category and tips on what to include on your entry form in the 'What to include' section below.
  2. Complete the Entry Form online or print and complete the pdf version – make sure you only complete the required sections for each category you are entering as indicated on the form. You can include any supportive documentation and/or pictures along with your Entry Form.
  3. Submit your entry online or post to Golf Environment Awards 2010, STRI, St Ives Estate, Bingley, BD16 1AU by the closing date of Friday 13 August 2010.

What to include in your entry

Below are some ideas of what you could include for the different awards and sections on the Entry Form:

  1. Environmental Improvement Project Award – four separate project Awards

    If you are entering a submission for a Project Award you will need to complete only the relevant section/s in Section 5 – Environmental Projects & Management to the project category you are entering.

    If you are entering the Environmental Achievement Award you will need to complete all four sections within Section 5 on the form.

    1. Nature Conservation Management
      • Your focus on deep rough grassland:
        • The links you have created between habitats
        • Your understanding of priority habitats and species and development of species diversity
      • Your focus on trees and woodland:
        • Removal of inappropriate trees and addition of 'good' trees
        • Your promotion of bird life and/or other wildlife
      • Your focus on heathland:
        • Details of areas where you have created and managed heathland
        • Wildlife audits you have in place to assess value of heathland
      • Your focus on water features:
        • Details of your pond and ditch management
        • How you introduced native aquatic plant/animal species
    2. Turfgrass Management
      • How you have managed turfgrass on your golf course.
      • Improvements seen in quality and improving environment
      • Detail any environmental protection measures you have introduced
      • What are your objectives and plans for future management?
    3. Waste Management
      • Details of your recycling initiatives
      • How you use recycled materials on/from your golf course
      • Any composting activities across the course
      • Your policy and ideas for waste management
    4. Water Management
      • How you have minimised your irrigation requirements
      • Your focus on water sourcing – from boreholes, irrigation reservoir/s, water butts etc
      • How you have tackled any contaminated water issues.
  2. Environmental Achievement Awards – one Overall Winner and five Regional Awards

    As noted above you will need to complete all four sections included above in Section 5 – Environmental Projects & Management.

    You will also need to complete Section 6 – Environmental Management - Team & Responsibilities, giving details of the team working on your environmental plans and projects, what the responsibilities are within the team and how you work together to achieve your goals.
  3. Conservation Greenkeeper Award – one Award to an individual

    If you or a member of your team would like to be considered for this award you need to complete Section 7 – Conservation Greenkeeper.

    You should include:
    • A description of projects/work you/they have undertaken
    • Initiatives and/or projects you/they have led/managed
    • How you/they have tried to introduce a more ‘environmentally friendly’ way of thinking within the golf club
    • Details of the improvements that have been made to the golf club/course
